There is plenty to love about New Zealand, but few exports have won hearts like Whittaker’s chocolate. Celebrated for its classic blocks, innovative recipes and rich mouthfeel, the brand has truly made the art of confectionery its own.
Enter ‘World of Whittakers’ – An immersive experience designed to celebrate New Zealand’s most iconic chocolate brand, loved in equal measure by Aussies. The weekend-long Sydney event will unwrap the rich history of over 125 years of Whittaker’s chocolate craftsmanship.
As for how it came to be – well, that’s a story worthy of a Roald Dahl book. But since he’s dabbled in telling tales of chocolatiers before, we’ll give it our best shot.
Whittaker who?
It all began when English-born J.H. Whittaker picked up his bags and got on a ship to New Zealand back in 1890. His years working for a large confectioner in Birmingham gave him his knowledge of chocolate and a twinkle in his eye.
Whittaker developed new recipes and began to sell them out of his own home.
Succession
At this point, you’re likely reminded of Timothee Chalamet’s rendition of Willy Wonka’s origin story and believe us, we see it too. But unlike Wonka, the Whittakers had no dearth of successors.
Whittaker’s sons, James and Ronald Whittaker, were the first to join the family business in 1911. The brothers took the business to Wellington. But when Whittaker passed away, his other children stepped up, followed by future generations.
The company is now in the hands of third-generation Whittakers – Andrew and Brian, while Andrew’s children Holly & Matt, fourth generation Whittaker’s, also work in the family business. That consistency of both family and quality is a testament to the legacy and tradition that drives the brand forward.
The Peanut Slab
Whittaker’s Peanut slab was created by J.H. Whittaker’s son, Maurice, 75 years ago. The block, made up of crunchy roasted peanuts surrounded by Whittaker’s 33% cocoa milk chocolate, is now recognised as a cornerstone of the brand.
Whittaker’s has weathered it all – wars, recessions, pandemics and even the construction of Hobbiton – and kept its place at the centre of Kiwi life. The Peanut Slab may be the headline act, but fans are just as loyal to Creamy Caramel, Coconut Block and Hokey Pokey. With 21 blocks in the range, there is plenty more to love beyond the classics.
On September 13 and 14 at World of Whittakers in Sydney, guests will have the chance to take home a piece of history – their very own Peanut slab to celebrate its 75 year anniversary.
“We’re thrilled to bring the World of Whittaker’s to life in Australia, giving chocolate lovers the opportunity to connect with our brand and learn about our rich history, all while enjoying our selection of blocks we have at Whittaker’s, and carving off a piece of history with their own Peanut Slab,” said Holly Whittaker.
“As a fourth-generation family business, crafting quality chocolate has been at the heart of what we do for over 125 years, and we’re excited to share that legacy with Sydneysiders.”
Free chocolate tastings and a Whittaker heritage walkthrough will also be available from 11 am – 3 pm at The Apartment at Chinatown Country Club, Sydney.
