McLaren Vale’s Beresford Estate is entering a new era, with the appointment of Natalie Cleghorn as its new Head Winemaker. The appointment signals a fresh direction for the South Australian winery.
Cleghorn joins with more than 26 years of experience across respected Australian producers, including Hill Smith Family, Katnook Estate and Mitchelton. Her background spans major regions and varieties, with a winemaking style focused on clarity, regional expression and a strong sense of place.
“I am excited to join Beresford Estate and to lead its winemaking team through a new era of excellence,” says Natalie Cleghorn. “The opportunity to craft wines that reflect not only the beauty of our vineyards, but also resonate with wine consumers from around the world, is very unique.”
She is a two-time finalist for the Australian Women in Wine Awards Winemaker of the Year and a graduate of the Len Evans Tutorial. Cleghorn has also served as a judge and panel chair at several major wine shows.
Earlier in her career, she also became the first female winemaker for Yalumba’s The Menzies, crafting the 2019 vintage that went on to win Best Cabernet at the 2021 James Halliday Cabernet Challenge.
Her arrival comes at a significant moment for Beresford Estate, which sits across a 70-acre vineyard producing a mix of classic and emerging varieties for connoisseurs to enjoy.
“Having someone of Natalie’s calibre join us is a big step forward for Beresford,” says Nan Zhou, Brand Manager. “She brings valuable experience across key regions and varieties, and she’ll play an important role in shaping our next chapter as we continue growing our portfolio.”
The estate’s current portfolio includes old vine Grenache, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, alongside Mediterranean grapes such as Fiano, Pecorino and Grillo. Founded in 1985 by Rob and Bronwyn Dundon, the estate has earned more than 2,000 medals and 200 trophies globally.
Beresford has also become known for its visitor experience, offering guided tastings at its Tasting Pavilion, boutique accommodation across its Suites and Villas, a luxury event space at Beresford House and the Vale Restaurant and Bar, which focuses on local produce paired with estate wines.
Cleghorn will oversee all winemaking across the portfolio with a focus on evolving style direction, progressing sustainability programs and strengthening the estate’s presence in both domestic and export markets.
