Queensland’s Breakfast Creek Hotel is getting a fresh look and a few new tricks. The heritage-listed pub, best known for its Spanish Garden Steakhouse and old-school charm, has kicked off a $2.75 million upgrade that signals a new chapter for the local icon.
The revamp is the first stage of a multi-phase project aimed at modernising the Creek while holding onto everything that makes it a local institution.
ALH Managing Director Paul Carew said the intention behind the update is to honour the pub’s rich legacy and all the milestone moments that have happened within its walls, while reimagining its future. “This is more than just a facelift. We’ve channelled the pioneering spirit that defines the Breakfast Creek into vibrant, contemporary spaces that set the tone for modern pub culture,” he said.
“This is one of the most iconic pubs in Queensland, if not Australia. It’s important that we continue to honour its legacy, while also ensuring a best-in-class hospitality experience for everyone that comes through the doors.”
Due for completion in November 2025, Phase 1 includes a full redesign of the Spanish Garden Steakhouse and the addition of a new open-air Pizza Kitchen.
Led by Cayas & Ward Architects and Herron Coorey Builders, the update brings in exposed brick, warm timber finishes and relaxed Queensland-style spaces built for long lunches and summer nights.
The People’s Pub
The Steakhouse will reopen with more seating, upgraded air-conditioning and a dry-age cabinet showcasing premium cuts from local producers like Darling Downs, Nolans, Five Founders and Black Onyx.
The classics aren’t going anywhere though – the Creek’s long-standing Idaho potato and coleslaw will stay put – joined by a bigger cocktail list and expanded wine selection.
The venue will also continue its 135-year-old tradition of serving XXXX beer off the wood, poured straight from wooden kegs behind the bar.
In the beer garden, the new Pizza Kitchen will bring woodfired pizza to the menu for the first time, offering a laid-back setting that fits the Creek’s social, sunshine-soaked vibe.
Breakfast Creek Hotel Publican Mike Rodgers says: “This place has always been the people’s pub, it’s where mates catch up and locals feel at home. We are still the same Brekky Creek that every Queenslander knows and loves.
“With summer approaching, we’re stoked to welcome folks back through the doors to experience the updates to the Spanish Garden, as well as the new Pizza Kitchen, for themselves. We’ve got cold beer, cracking food and a seat in our beer garden with mates. That’s what the Creek’s all about.”
The refresh is just the beginning, with new private dining and event spaces set to be unveiled in 2026. The pub will remain open to guests in the meantime.
