After an eight-year break, Brisbane’s much-loved Italian festival is back. Festitalia will take over the RNA Showgrounds on Father’s Day, Sunday, September 7, with a full day of food, music and entertainment.
The program brings all the classics including woodfired pizza, handmade pasta, espresso bars, gelato carts – with a few fun quirks, from tug-of-war and nonna’s slipper throw to a “best dressed Italian dad” competition.
On the stage, expect everything from opera to folk bands, alongside roaming theatre acts and young local talent. And then there’s the spectacle you won’t want to miss: pizza acrobatics.
World champion pizza acrobat Youssef Ben Touati will bring his dough-spinning showmanship to the crowd. Originally from Perugia, Italy, Ben Touati has competed globally and earned multiple titles, turning the craft of pizza into performance art.
His passion for pizza flourished at “La Casetta,” his uncle’s pizzeria in Perugia, where his natural skill quickly drew the attention of the Italian National Team of Pizzaioli. Under the mentorship of Danilo Pagano, he began competing both nationally and internationally, winning first place in Freestyle Pizza and a bronze in Gourmet Pizza at the 2013 International Pizza Championship in Rimini.
As his reputation grew, Youssef was invited to collaborate with the Italian government on cultural projects, promoting and exporting authentic Italian food culture overseas. Through this role, he became an ambassador of Italian culinary heritage, blending education, performance, and gastronomy to showcase the artistry of pizza on the world stage.
The festival is a celebration of Italian culture in all its forms, with vintage car displays, fencing lessons, Roman history and the warmth and chaos of nonna’s kitchen recreated for the day.
Festitalia runs Sunday, September 7, at the RNA Showgrounds, Brisbane.
