Ahead of World Sustainability Day on October 29 , Oxford Landing is spotlighting the work that’s shaping its next chapter in sustainability. The South Australian winery has been expanding its purpose-driven collections, Regenerate and One-to-One, both now available locally and soon heading to international markets.
Earlier this year, Oxford Landing’s parent company, Hill-Smith Family Estates became Australia’s first Gold Member of the International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA).
The recognition reflects the group’s continued focus on reducing carbon emissions across every stage of winemaking, from vine to bottle, and encouraging the wider industry to adapt to a changing climate.
Building the future of wine
With shifting harvests and rising temperatures, the wine industry faces new challenges, but Oxford Landing sees opportunity in adapting for the next generation of winemakers. Founded in 1958, the Riverland-based winery has stayed closely connected to its land and community, with six generations of the Hill-Smith family maintaining the philosophy of place, people and purpose.
Its sustainability progress is measurable across several areas:
Revegetation: Over 215,000 native trees and shrubs planted since 2007, plus 30,000 sqm of native bushland through a partnership with Greenfleet.
Renewable Energy: 20% of operations are now powered by renewable sources, with ongoing investment in energy efficiency.
Water Stewardship: 100% of the winery’s wastewater is recycled or repurposed for drought-tolerant vines across the Hill-Smith Family Estates vineyards.
Lightweight Bottles: New 360–363g bottles are made with close to 50% recycled content, reducing carbon emissions through production and shipping by approximately 254 tonnes annually.
Traceability: Oxford Landing wines are made and bottled in South Australia, ensuring authenticity and quality.
Vegan Friendly: All wines are made without animal products.
Accreditation: In addition to being Australia’s first IWCA Gold Member, Hill-Smith Family Estates is accredited by Sustainable Winegrowing Australia.
Wine with purpose
Oxford Landing’s sustainability message is best expressed through its Regenerate and One-to-One ranges, designed to make environmentally conscious drinking more accessible.
The Regenerate collection, consisting of Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, embodies Oxford Landing’s sustainability ethos. Every bottle proudly bears the Sustainable Winegrowing Certification and Riverland Geographical Indication (GI), supporting this vital winemaking community and its commitment to native regeneration, biodiversity and water conservation.
These wines capture the character of a vineyard in harmony with its ecosystem, where vines, birds, insects, frogs and bats can coexist.
Meanwhile, the One-to-One collection, consisting of Cuvée, Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, takes a direct-action approach. For every six-pack enjoyed, one square metre of native bushland is planted through Greenfleet, restoring habitats and enriching biodiversity.
To date, the initiative has supported over 30,000 square metres of regeneration, protected for 100 years.
Recognition for a long-term commitment
Oxford Landing’s ongoing work has been recognised across the industry, earning the South Australian Wine Industry Association’s Environment Excellence Award (large business category), Coles Sustainability Partner of the Year and the Sustainable Wine Growing Australia/Riverland Wine Trophy for Best Sustainable Wine at the Riverland Wine Show.
As the conversation around sustainability grows louder across the wine world, Oxford Landing’s efforts show how long-term environmental thinking can shape not only better vineyards, but a stronger future for Australian winemaking.
