In the lead up to World Food Day (October 16), The Hunger Project Australia has launched its Every Bite Counts initiative, collaborating with the local food industry to help tackle global hunger. Partnering with restaurants, cafes and takeaway apps across the country, the initiative will run throughout October to raise funds for community-led programs in Africa, India and Mexico.
With 1 in 12 people globally going hungry every day – and women and children the most affected – The Hunger Project’s latest initiative demonstrates how collective action from Australia’s food industry can drive meaningful change in these communities.
Philippe Magid, CEO of The Hunger Project Australia, said: “Every meal we enjoy is a reminder that 673million people don’t have the same privilege.
“Through our Every Bite Counts campaign, we’re showing how Australian businesses can be part of the solution to global hunger, while engaging their customers and teams in creating positive social impact.”
The campaign
Participating businesses will dedicate a portion of their October revenue to The Hunger Project’s work in nutrition training, climate-resilient farming and local food security. The organisation says these programs address the complex drivers of hunger, from gender inequality and conflict to climate change.
Every Bite Counts partners include Eat Club, with 3,000 participating venues, Hey You with over 3,000 restaurants, as well as Butter, Little Lagos, Charlie’s Fine Food Co, La Tortilleria, Masala Kitchen, Jambo Foods and 6Head.
The Hunger Project is a global movement working to end hunger and poverty through sustainable,
women-centred strategies.
Recent data from the group shows over 31,000 community partners were trained in nutrition practices last year via its programs, with 9 out of 10 participants increasing the number of healthy meals consumed by their families and recording an overall 20% reduction in hunger in the communities in which they work.
