Freshwater Brewing’s taproom reopens as 250-seat Freshie Clubhouse

Freshwater Brewing Company’s Brookvale Taproom has reopened as Freshie Clubhouse, a 250-seat locals pub serving red frog-topped cocktails, potato scallops and a heavy dose of Northern Beaches nostalgia.

The renovated venue takes its cues from old surf clubs and RSLs, with Tassie Oak panelling, retro carpet, booth seating, glass bricks, louvres and walls lined with photos of local surfing legends and newspaper clippings.

Freshie Clubhouse is the latest project from Folly’s Bar & Bistro owners Lachy Sturrock and Sam Smith, who bought into Freshwater Brewing Company earlier this year.

Sturrock, who lives locally, said the venue was designed as a celebration of the Northern Beaches and its laid-back way of life.

“This is a true locals pub.

“It’s a place for everybody, whether you’re visiting with your kids, your mates or your dog, and it’s always going to be a good time.”

The venue has casual dining and bar spaces, a pool table and live sport on the TVs, alongside a family area with chalkboard walls, astro turf and a basketball hoop.

The menu follows the same retro-Australian brief.

Crispy potato scallops come with chicken salt and whipped sour cream, while the hot chips are finished with salt made from native ingredients.

There is also an iceberg wedge with ranch dressing, bacon and parmesan.

The headline main is the Parmi alla vodka, made with herb-crumbed chicken breast, smoked ham, alla vodka sauce and mozzarella, served with hot chips and seasonal leaves.

It takes inspiration from the alla vodka pasta served at Folly’s, combining one of the Cammeray venue’s biggest dishes with an Aussie pub classic.

“That dish has been huge for us,” Sturrock said.

“We wanted to bring something from our first venue over to Freshie, and what better way to do that than to marry it with one of the country’s most iconic pub dishes.”

Other options include crumbed lamb cutlets, a burger with the lot featuring pineapple, bacon and beetroot relish, and a fish burger with crumbed barramundi, house-made tartare and iceberg lettuce.

Freshwater Brewing Company is still brewing onsite, with more than 15 beers pouring from the custom Oregon wood bar.

The drinks list has also expanded to include wine and cocktails, led by the Goodie Bag, a fruity riff on a whiskey sour topped with a red frog.

Around half of the cocktails use Freshwater Brewing Company beer or hops, while the wine list covers Australian, Italian, French and South American producers.

Freshie Clubhouse is running happy hour from 4pm to 6pm every Wednesday to Friday, with $6.50 schooners, $8.50 pints and $14 cocktails.

A $35 Sunday roast with all the trimmings is also available from this weekend.

Freshie Clubhouse is open from 12pm until late Wednesday to Saturday and from 12pm to 10pm on Sundays, with reservations and walk-ins welcome.

Toby’s Estate is turning its Fitzroy flagship into a daytime DJ session

Toby’s Estate is turning its Fitzroy café into a four-hour listening session this month, complete with vinyl, DJs and, of course, coffee. Rose St Session runs from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday, August 29, at the brand’s 35 Rose Street flagship, with Toby’s Estate teaming up with La Marzocco and Oh! Jean Records for a daytime takeover soundtracked entirely from the decks. On the bill are DJ InokoMAX (aka Max Allison-Brock, owner of Melbourne institution Good Measure and the man behind the now-iconic Mont Blanc coffee) and Toby’s Estate resident DJ Nico Deoki. It’s less nightclub-at-10 am, more a genuinely good live soundtrack with even better coffee alongside it. Oh! Jean Records will run a vinyl pop-up on-site, while La Marzocco joins Toby’s Estate behind the machines. Everything coming through the speakers is on Max and Nico. It’s the latest move from Toby’s Estate to make its Fitzroy flagship a place people actually stick around in, rather than somewhere to grab a coffee and go. The venue, which opened in early 2025, sits right in the middle of Melbourne’s coffee heartland, a city where café culture has long stretched well beyond what’s in the cup. That’s borne out in the numbers, too. Research commissioned by Toby’s Estate found one in ten Victorians has already been to a café rave, more than any other state in the country, and Victorians are also the nation’s most prolific café daters, with 41% having been on a café date compared with 35% nationally. They’re ahead of the curve on coffee trends as well, more likely than anywhere else to have tried nitro coffee, Mont Blanc iced coffee and sparkling coffee tonics. Rose St Session might not technically be a rave, but going by that data, Melbourne clearly isn’t opposed to the idea of a DJ with its coffee. Plate It Forward is celebrating one million meals with a laneway party

Plate It Forward has hit a serious milestone: one million meals donated since the social enterprise was founded six years ago. The Sydney-based hospitality group, founded by Shaun Christie-David, runs venues including Colombo Social, Kyiv Social and Kabul Social. Through its restaurants, catering and events, it creates employment and training opportunities for people facing systemic barriers to work, while running meal programs for communities experiencing food insecurity across Australia and Sri Lanka. It now provides 14,000 meals a week. Of the million meals, around 710,000 have gone to communities in Sydney, with the remaining 290,000 reaching people in Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Ukraine and beyond. Christie-David said, “It’s very rare that we stop and reflect on the impact we’ve created, but one million meals is a pretty special moment. When we started Plate It Forward, I never imagined it would become what it is today. Around 710,000 of those meals have gone to communities here in Sydney, with another 290,000 reaching people in Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Ukraine and beyond. “What makes me most proud isn’t really the number. It’s the people behind it. We have this incredible team who inspire me every day, and a community we are so proud to feed. Every one of you has a story, every one of you matters, and every meal carries a little bit of the love we put into making it. “I’m incredibly grateful to everyone at Plate It Forward and beyond who has made this possible. I can’t wait to see what the next million looks like.” In Sydney, Plate It Forward provides meals through partnerships with RedLink in Redfern, Rough Edges in Darlinghurst, Redfern Jarjum College in Redfern, Weave Youth & Community Services in Waterloo, and Hume Housing in Telopea. In Sri Lanka, the organisation supports Harvest, a long-term food security program delivered in partnership with Dilmah Tea and the MJF Foundation. The program currently runs across 23 schools, providing daily meals to more than 2,700 children while supporting better school attendance and long-term opportunities in rural communities. To mark the milestone, Plate It Forward is throwing a party in the Kyiv Social laneway, bringing together the team, volunteers, partners, donors and the guests who’ve dined, catered or booked events across its venues over the years. A serious lineup of chefs and hospitality names will be on the BBQ, including Mitch Orr (formerly Ace Hotel and 25hours Hotels), Darryl Martin (Watermans), Brendan King (Derrel’s), NipCooks, Serwan Roman and Andrew Vu (Roman’s Deli), and the women of Kabul Social. Young Henrys will be pouring, with music running throughout the afternoon. Plate It Forward’s One Million Meals Laneway Party runs from 12:30 pm on August 30 at Kyiv Social Laneway, Grafton Lane, Chippendale. KeepCup adds Nitro Pine to its bestselling Ora Bottle range

KeepCup‘s Ora Insulated Water Bottle now comes in Nitro Pine, a deep, earthy green paired with chrome, available across the bottle range. The Melbourne-founded reusable drinkware brand is rolling Nitro Pine out across the Ora Bottle, the Go Bowl Luxe and the Commuter Insulated Travel Cup, so anyone after a matching set can pick up all three in the one colourway. The Ora Bottle remains KeepCup’s most versatile piece, with two ways to drink from it: through the removable stainless steel straw, or straight from the spout. It’s made for all-day use, whether that’s the gym, the desk or dinner, and works as a simple swap for single-use plastic bottles. The lid is leakproof and one-touch, so it’s safe to throw in a bag and easy to open with one hand. A carry handle and a shape that fits standard cup holders mean it works equally well on the school run or on a hike. It’s vacuum insulated, keeping drinks cold for 24 hours or more, and the stainless steel construction means no flavour transfer between drinks. With fewer parts than most bottles, it’s also quicker to clean. The Ora Bottle is made from 90% recycled stainless steel, with a 50% recycled Tritan lid, keeping it light, durable and lead-free. It’s made to last and to be repaired rather than thrown out, which fits with KeepCup’s broader stance that the most sustainable product is simply the one people keep using. “Hydration is a daily habit and we wanted to create a bottle that is as versatile and easy to use as it is durable,” says Abigail Forsyth, co-founder of KeepCup. “Nitro Pine has become one of our most-loved colourways, and it felt like a natural fit for the Ora Bottle, giving people another way to bring a considered, cohesive design into their everyday routine.” KeepCup was started in Melbourne in 2009 by Abigail and Jamie Forsyth. It began with the world’s first barista-standard reusable cup, made to cut down on single-use coffee cup waste, and the brand is now sold in more than 75 countries. The Ora Bottle in Nitro Pine is available for $60 AUD (700ml) and $70 AUD (950ml) via the Australian website and selected retailers.
