Kinder’s latest eggs come with some very familiar faces inside, as Disney and PLAYMOBIL take over Kinder Surprise and Super Mario lands in Kinder Joy.

Kinder Surprise has 18 Disney characters to collect as PLAYMOBIL figures, spanning Toy Story, The Incredibles, Aladdin, Peter Pan and Moana. Genie, Woody, Mr Incredible and Moana are all in there, making this one of Kinder Surprise’s biggest licensed toy collections yet.

The PLAYMOBIL figures also connect to Kinder’s free Applaydu app, where they can be scanned into an augmented reality experience once the egg is open. The Disney and PLAYMOBIL collection is available in both single Kinder Surprise eggs and three-packs, with the collaboration running until January 2027.

Kinder Joy is taking a different tack, handing its surprise side over to Nintendo for a Super Mario collection aimed at older kids.

There are 23 toys and accessories to collect across Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Yoshi and friends, including backpack hangers, pencil decorations, highlighters, paper clips and figurines. The school-bag-friendly pieces make the most of a fandom that already lives well beyond the console, while a scan-and-play filter gives the collection an extra digital element.

The other half of the Kinder Joy egg stays familiar, with creamy Kinder chocolate and crispy wafer bites sitting opposite the Super Mario surprise.

Azzurra Puricelli, Head of Marketing and New Business at Ferrero, said, “We’re thrilled to kick off our biggest season of collaborations. Across Kinder Surprise and Kinder Joy, we’re bringing together the stories and characters families already love, from timeless Disney tales and hands-on PLAYMOBIL play, to the trend-led excitement of Super Mario.

“With two iconic eggs offering different ways to discover, play and connect, there’s a Kinder moment for every stage of growing up.”

The Disney and PLAYMOBIL collection leans more heavily into imaginative play for younger families, while Super Mario gives tweens and teens something they can carry into school, swap with friends or clip onto the things they already use every day.

The Kinder Surprise Disney and PLAYMOBIL collection and Kinder Joy Super Mario collection are available now at major grocery retailers and convenience stores nationwide until January 2027.

South Australia scores 11 Michelin stars in Australian first

South Australia has officially joined the global Michelin Guide map, marking the Guide’s first-ever expansion into Australia. The Michelin Guide South Australia 2027 recognises 77 restaurants across the state, celebrating their craft, creativity and distinct sense of place. After months of anonymous inspections, the Michelin Guide has awarded one Adelaide restaurant, Magill Estate Restaurant, Two Michelin Stars. Ten restaurants have received One Michelin Star, 16 have been recognised with a Bib Gourmand for offering good food at great value and a further 50 are included in the Michelin Selected category. Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guide, said, “South Australia’s debut has been very impressive. It speaks to a food culture of real depth, where exceptional produce, skilled chefs and an unmistakable sense of place come together. “What struck our Inspectors was the sheer diversity on display – European, Southeast Asian and Japanese traditions sitting naturally alongside native ingredients such as quandong, lemon myrtle and native Australian meats, never as novelty, but as an honest expression of place. “From Adelaide’s easy-going dining rooms to the restaurants within wineries of the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, and Adelaide Hills, fire is the thread that runs through it all – wood and charcoal used not as a trend, but as a technique that lets exceptional local produce speak for itself. “It is a food culture unburdened by rigid tradition, and all the more distinctive for it – technically refined yet relaxed, generous and unmistakably South Australian in its warmth.” Magill Estate Restaurant awarded Two Michelin Stars The sole recipient of Two Michelin Stars in the first South Australian edition is Magill Estate Restaurant, led by Chef Scott Huggins. Sitting at the base of the Adelaide Hills and overlooking the vineyards of the Penfolds winery, the restaurant pairs Australian produce with precise technique across a 10-course tasting menu, which may feature dishes such as sea urchin with snow peas and tarragon or spring lamb Wellington with kohlrabi. Service is warm and engaging, while wine is naturally a major part of the experience, with the Icon pairing showcasing the breadth of local winemakers. 10 restaurants receive One Michelin Star Inspectors awarded One Michelin Star to the following restaurants: Anvers Restaurant: In the Adelaide Hills countryside, the panoramic views are almost worth the trip alone. Chef Connor Bishop’s creative Long Story menu tells a story of modern Australian cooking, with Paroo kangaroo, Murray cod and flavourful damper bread taking centre stage, all paired with Anvers wines. Aptos: Set inside a fully renovated former church, Chef Justin James serves a creative, product-focused tasting menu over more than three hours and across three different rooms, with native Australian ingredients in the spotlight. arkhé: Located on The Parade in Norwood, the restaurant starts with cocktails at the bar before diners can take a seat at the counter, where Chef Jake Kellie and his team cook over an open fire. Dishes include Peking duck wontons with smoked duck broth and Eyrewoolf abalone. Aurora at ILA: On the ground floor of the ILA Visual Arts Museum, Aurora serves modern Australian food with global influences, with plenty of cooking over open flame. Seasonal produce drives the menu and both meat and vegetable dishes are handled with depth and precision, while the vegetarian options are given just as much consideration. Skillogalee Barrel House: Surrounded by the rolling hills and vineyards of the Clare Valley, Skillogalee Barrel House offers a distinctly regional dining experience shaped by the area around it. The kitchen works closely with local farmers and estate-grown ingredients to create contemporary Australian dishes. Botanic: Set within a former teahouse dating back to the 1800s, Chef Jamie Musgrave’s tasting menu is dedicated to showcasing some of Australia’s best ingredients. Esmay: Inside the Hackney Hotel, Esmay’s bright dining room has a relaxed, convivial feel, with counter seats giving diners a front-row spot near the chefs. Chef Alanna Sapwell follows the seasons while bringing plenty of playfulness and her own perspective to dishes, including calamari with kohlrabi seasoned with fish sauce. Hentley Farm: Set among the rolling hills of the Barossa Valley, Hentley Farm occupies a former barn where diners walk through the kitchen on the way to their table. Chef Kyle Johns’ Discovery Tasting Menu follows the seasons, with dishes such as flash-fried abalone over creamy tomato rice and tender pork with fermented blueberry jus. LVN Restaurant at Bird in Hand: Sitting within Bird in Hand Winery in the Adelaide Hills, LVN, named using the initials of the owner’s daughter, looks out over the surrounding landscape from a dining room filled with contemporary art. Open for lunch only, the restaurant serves a tasting menu from Chef Jacob Davey using high-quality ingredients, including vegetables from the onsite garden and nearby farms. Everything is cooked over live fire in the open kitchen. Maxwell Restaurant: Inspired by McLaren Vale’s four seasons, Chef Fabian Lehmann oversees a creative tasting menu at Maxwell Restaurant above the family-owned vineyard. Lehmann brings together his experiences in Europe and the Nordics with high-quality produce, resulting in dishes such as mussels with apple concassé, fennel and curry-flavoured mayonnaise or marron with chilli bisque. 16 restaurants awarded Bib Gourmand for good quality cooking at great value The Bib Gourmand highlights restaurants where diners can find high-quality, thoughtful cooking at more approachable prices, with recipients spread across South Australia. Eleven Barrack pairs steak frites with a limited Bordeaux for Pink October

Sydney CBD’s Eleven Barrack is going pink this October, pairing steak frites with a limited Bordeaux that has supported breast cancer causes for more than 20 years. The CBD restaurant is serving a 300g Black Opal MBS 6–7 Rôstbiff cooked over the wood-fired grill with Barrack-seasoned matchstick fries, alongside Château Joanin Bécot’s 2019 Pink Edition. Diners can add Sydney rock oysters, a bluefin tuna crumpet or duck liver parfait to start. Breast cancer support Château Joanin Bécot was established by Juliette Bécot in 2001 in Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux, east of Saint-Émilion, where the vineyard sits on limestone-rich soils. The Bécot family has supported breast cancer foundations for more than two decades, even breaking with French wine tradition to dress the bottle in a pink label and collar as a mark of solidarity. For every bottle poured at Eleven Barrack this month, $10 will go to the McGrath Foundation. Through Australian importer PS Wine Selections, $4 from every bottle sold nationally is also donated to the foundation, while Château Joanin Bécot contributes €2 from each bottle sold worldwide to breast cancer research. “This October, we’re pairing our steak frites lunch with the Château Joanin Bécot Pink Edition, a Bordeaux that has supported breast cancer causes for more than 20 years. We’d love diners to come in, share a bottle and support the McGrath Foundation,” said Nick Hildebrandt, Eleven Barrack co-owner and sommelier. The 2019 Pink Edition is made by the team behind Château Beau-Séjour Bécot, a Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé that holds a two-grape rating in the Michelin Guide 2026, the same level as Mouton Rothschild and Margaux. Only around 1,200 bottles of the Pink Edition are available in Australia, with the wine already listed at more than 47 Michelin-starred restaurants and poured in Air France’s business lounge. The McGrath Foundation began with a focus on breast cancer 20 years ago and now supports people living with all cancers. Its 423 McGrath Cancer Care Nurses provide free clinical and emotional support to patients and families across Australia, at a time when close to one in two Australians are likely to be diagnosed with cancer. Eleven Barrack’s Pink October steak frites lunch runs through to the end of the month. Source: The Cru Find more dining out updates on Crumb Wire.

McHappy Day returns with Grimace socks, Cool Caps and Big Mac donations

Grimace and Hamburglar are doing their bit for McHappy Day this year, returning on a new pair of Silly Socks as Macca’s kicks off another round of fundraising for Ronald McDonald House Australia. The $6.50 Silly Socks are joined by new stonewash Cool Caps for $9.95, with 100% of profits from both going directly to Ronald McDonald House Australia. The merch is available from October 14, giving people a chance to start contributing before McHappy Day itself arrives in November. Barbara Ryan, Chief Executive Officer for Ronald McDonald House Australia, said, “McHappy Day is one of the most important fundraising campaigns of the year for Ronald McDonald House in Australia, and we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who gets involved. “By purchasing a pair of Silly Socks, popping on a Cool Cap or making a donation, Australians are helping support families with children who are ill or injured when they need it most. “The launch of this year’s McHappy Day merchandise is the perfect opportunity to get involved early and show your support. McHappy Day is a great chance to make a small purchase that makes a big difference for Aussie families.” McHappy Day has been running since 1991 and remains Ronald McDonald House Australia’s largest annual fundraiser. Australians have helped raise more than $83 million through the campaign, supporting services for families with children who are ill or injured. Ronald McDonald House Australia now supports more than 89,000 families each year through Ronald McDonald Houses, Family Accommodation, Family Rooms, Family Hubs, Family Retreats, Hospitality Carts and the Learning Program. Together, those services help families stay close to their children and access somewhere to rest, regroup and find support during treatment and hospital stays. “McHappy Day is a special moment for Aussies to come together and make a meaningful difference for families supported by Ronald McDonald House Australia. Every year, we’re incredibly grateful for the generosity shown by our customers, crew and local communities,” said Annabel Fribence, Chief Marketing Officer for McDonald’s Australia. “Whether it’s purchasing a pair of Silly Socks, grabbing a Cool Cap, making a donation or buying a Big Mac on McHappy Day, every contribution helps families stay together during some of life’s toughest moments. We’re proud to be part of a community that continues to rally behind this important cause.” There are a few ways to contribute this year beyond the socks and caps: Helping Hands – available for $2, $10 or $50, giving customers another way to add their support in store. Online donations – donations can be made through the McHappy Day website from anywhere. Big Mac donations – on McHappy Day, $2 from every Big Mac sold will be donated to Ronald McDonald House Australia, whether it is bought on its own or as part of a meal. The Silly Socks and Cool Caps will be available at Macca’s restaurants nationwide through drive thru, kiosk, front counter, the MyMacca’s app and McDelivery from October 14 while stocks last.
