An exhibition exploring Western Australia’s food heritage opened on Friday, September 19, at the State Library of Western Australia. A Recipe for Life: The Food That Shapes Us explores the interconnected histories of food, business, migration and identity in WA.
The exhibition presents stories and items from the State Library collection, including historic cookbooks, menus from memorable restaurants and occasions, archival photography and advertising from iconic WA brands and eateries.
WA food and hospitality identities Anna Gare, Blaze Young, Dale Tilbrook, George Kailis, Marco D’Orsogna and Russell Blaikie have shared their stories as part of a new video oral history series which debuted in the exhibition.
Creative Industries Minister Simone McGurk says: “Some of the best stories begin with food, which is what makes this exhibition so compelling.
“From homegrown brands to the personal memories of some of WA’s food stars, A Recipe for Life shows how food has shaped our State and our lives.
The exhibition charts changing tastes and palettes of Western Australians through the State Library’s extensive collections of historical material and more contemporary stories.
“The exhibition is a tasty reminder of the State Library’s role in preserving our past and celebrating our shared stories,” McGurk adds.
A Recipe for Life: The Food That Shapes Us will run at the Ground Floor Gallery of the State Library of Western Australia until 22 March 2026. Entry is free.
