Eat, explore and connect at Yirranma Place’s November Open Day

Yirranma Place in Darlinghurst will host a Community Open Day on November 29, inviting Sydneysiders to explore the social enterprise precinct and the organisations based there. Running from 10am to 12 noon, the event will include free food and drinks, live music, children’s workshops and opportunities to learn more about the work of resident for-purpose groups including Two Good Co., Burraga Foundation, Equality Australia, Youth Action, NCOSS and Global Sisters. Set on Gadigal land, Yirranma Place is a historic building that has been redeveloped as a hub for social impact and philanthropy. Two Good Co., which operates the onsite café, will lead the day’s hospitality program with a focus on food, care and community connection. “At Two Good, hospitality heals,” said Marlon Kigonya, General Manager of Hospitality at Two Good Co. “When someone walks into our café, they’re stepping into more than a place that serves food. It’s a space that restores dignity and connection.” The café will feature a portrait installation by Jess Lindsay and host a free bake sale offering honey cake, red velvet and confetti cake, along with items drawn from the new Sweet Memories cookbook collection such as berry-mallow shortcake, vegan choco cookies, cake popsicles and shortbread. Savoury options, nostalgic drinks and coffee will also be available. A series of collaborative offerings will run throughout the morning, including Tilly Dogs from Love, Tilly Devine on the rooftop, tiramisu from Ciao Fabbrica and purpose-led flavours from Elato Gelato. Visitors will be able to explore the Social Enterprise Market Hall inside Yirranma Place, which will bring together a range of impact-focused brands and makers across food, wellbeing, lifestyle and homewares. The program will extend across the precinct with the restored heritage organ being played for the first time since its refurbishment, as well as a listening tour highlighting the stories and work of Yirranma Place’s resident organisations. Conversations with partners including NCOSS, SMART Recovery, Equality Australia, Youth Action, Two Good Co., the Burraga Foundation and Global Sisters will also take place. Family-friendly activities will feature throughout the building, including a giant Christmas tree in Blue Gum Hall, a bauble-decorating station supporting Twenty10 and a range of workshops offering face painting, yoga and clay crafts. “Sydney does hospitality better than anywhere, but what makes it special is heart. At Two Good, our chefs and women cook with that in mind: the same hands that build a cake or pack a hamper are also rebuilding confidence,” added Bec Foley, Community and Events Manager at Yirranma Place. “Yirranma Place lets us share that spirit more widely – it’s where stories of purpose, belonging and good food come together. The Community Open Day is our way of inviting people to taste that story and see how hospitality can be an act of healing.” The Community Open Day will be held on November 29 from 10am to 12 noon at Yirranma Place, 262 Liverpool Street, Darlinghurst. Aambra opens inside restored Rose Bay church

Aambra, a new Levantine restaurant in Sydney’s east, opens today inside the restored former Rose Bay Uniting Church. The heritage-listed property on Old South Head Rd has been brought back to life after sitting unused for more than ten years, with a 140-seat fit-out designed to reflect the region’s traditions, flavours and communal style of dining. Owner Cristian Gorgees has spent more than three years transforming the 120-year-old building with interior designer Paul Papadopoulos of DS17. The space retains key architectural elements, including original stained glass windows and a cathedral ceiling, paired with new finishes such as custom Italian marble tiles, Venetian plaster walls and a brass and linen light installation suspended above the main dining room. A mezzanine private dining room overlooks the venue, while an open bar and kitchen run along one side, offering views of dishes being prepared over an open flame. “This property is such an important part of Rose Bay and Sydney’s history, so we wanted to make sure there was something special about every inch of it,” said Gorgees. Executive chef Gianluca Lonati has created a menu shaped by Gorgees’ Iraqi family dishes and influences from across the Levant, including Lebanon, Jordan, Cyprus and Egypt. Levantine cuisine is steeped in traditions and rituals and is about so much more than simply eating,” added Lonati. “We want guests to experience each dish in a way that elicits memories long after they’ve gone home.” The share-style offering includes oysters with fermented onion and isot oil, tuna kibbeh nayeh, tongue shawarma, woodfired chicken manti and a whole blue grouper masgouf with tamarind and tomato. Larger dishes include a dry-aged carob duck crown, merguez stuffed lamb saddle and an 800g wagyu rib eye cooked over the grill. The drinks list, curated by sommelier Sasa Savic, spans more than 130 wines alongside cocktails such as a watermelon martini, arak elderflower spritz and jaffa margarita. Guests can dine inside or in the alfresco area, which features olive trees, lounge seating and a multi-level deck overlooking Old South Head Rd. Gorgees’ aim is for the venue to become a place for guests to explore Levantine food and culture while making their own memories in the restored landmark. “It’s always been a place of sanctuary and that’s how we want it to live on, where people can escape reality for a few hours and come together with the people that mean the most to them,” said Gorgees. Aambra will open for dinner from Tuesday to Sunday and for lunch from Thursday to Sunday. Source: Wine Glass Media Find more food and drink updates on Crumb Wire.

Daphne, a new public house from restaurateur Hannah Green, known for Etta, is now open on Lygon Street, Melbourne. The venue combines a walk-in friendly front bar with a bistro-style dining room, designed for everything from quick snacks to late evenings. A private space at the back seats up to 30 guests, and Pip Littore, former Restaurant Manager at Etta, has joined to manage the floor. A produce-focused menu has been designed by Head Chef Diana Desensi, making use of a custom woodfire hearth. The hearth was built by Samuel Frararracio of The Brick Chef. Snacks include heirloom tomatoes with pickles and olives, grilled potato flatbread with mussels and whipped cod, and beef tartare with potato crisps. Larger dishes range from a Cobb salad to ricotta tortellini with artichoke and radicchio, a half fire-roasted chook with blistered grapes and a pork cotoletta from Bundarra Farm. A children’s menu covers burgers, chicken and vegetables and spaghetti Napoli. From 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays, a supper menu takes over with terrines, tinned fish, midnight spaghetti with anchovies and capers and gelato topped with shoestring fries. Daphne will also run weekly neighbourhood nights. Martini Club takes place on Mondays with a short list of snacks. Tuesdays are Steak Night, offering rotating cuts or a vegetarian pie with fries and leaves for $30. Wednesdays are dedicated to pasta, with $25 plates such as calamari cavatelli or linguini with pistachio pesto and stracciatella. Drinks hotshot Sam Peasnell leads the cocktail program. The list includes an Olive Oil Sour finished with a crack of black pepper, a Rhubarb Spritz lifted with white balsamic and a Guinness Americano. The martini line-up features classic styles and the 3057, a reverse martini served over ice and made with vermouth, El Maestro Fino Sherry and a celery gin created with local distiller White Possum. On tap, wines by Dom Valentine pour by the glass or carafe, alongside Daphne Draught produced by Hop Nation Brewing Co. Sommelier Ashley Boburka has curated a compact wine list focused on fresh, food-friendly bottles, with access to the full Etta wine selection also available. “It’s a restaurateur’s answer to a pub,” said Green. “The mood is fun and easygoing, the food is highly delicious but not too fancy.” “Our rules are that my dad should be able to read and understand everything on the menu, and it should be as accessible for after-school snacks and casual catch-ups as it is for milestone celebrations and midnight martinis.” Designed by IF Architecture, the 125-seat space features walnut timber, stainless steel, glass brick, Australian marble and restored terrazzo flooring. Music is played through the original Bar Romantica sound system, with playlists curated by DJ JNETT. Daphne brings together everything Green does best in a lively, new local that strives to be here for both a good time and a long time. Meet Melbourne’s new Cointreau-soaked Christmas panettone

Melbourne’s Gigi’s Gelato and St Remio Coffee have collaborated on a new Christmas release, combining traditional panettone with coffee semifreddo for a seasonal dessert offering. The limited-edition panettone is available to order until December 8, with collection available up to December 23. Created by chef Gigi Pozzoli, the panettone uses St Remio’s St Francis blend, a medium-light roast characterised by chocolate notes and subtle nutty sweetness. Each panettone is hollowed, soaked in Cointreau syrup and filled with a coffee semifreddo before being finished with either a chocolate or coffee glaze and a dusting of chocolate shavings. “We’re very proud of this panettone,” said Gigi Pozzoli. “There’s nothing quite like it on the market.” Both brands share a Slow Food influence, reflected in their focus on quality ingredients and considered production. “We want people to see more than just an end product,” added Julia Tink, St Remio Co-Founder. “It’s about acknowledging the journey – from the farmers who grow our coffee beans to the hands that craft them into something special.” The collaboration brings together Gigi’s Gelato’s Italian dessert craft and St Remio’s approach to sustainably sourced coffee. The panettone is priced at $105 for the chocolate glaze and $100 for the coffee glaze. Source: Honey Buzz PR Find more food and drink updates on Crumb Wire.
