Low-carb alcoholic beverage brand, Barry, has added a new flavour to its line-up, unveiling Cherry Vanilla Cola as the brand’s first whisky-based ready-to-drink.
The 330mL cans (5% ABV, 1.3 standard drinks) bring together classic cola with a sharp cherry kick, rounded out by vanilla, while the whisky base adds notes of warming spice and smoky caramel.
“We gave classic cola a glow up. We took that iconic fizz and hit it with a sharp cherry kick, rounded out by a rich vanilla finish. Underneath, a smooth whisky with hints of warming spice and smoky caramel keeps things interesting. It’s a timeless combo remixed for right now,” says the official Barry website.
The launch campaign
To support the launch, co-founders and AFL stars Bailey Smith, Charlie Curnow and Collingwood’s Nick and Josh Daicos have switched on creator-mode and tapped into nostalgia with a playful ad campaign.
Timed with the AFL finals, the spot parodies Cougar Bourbon’s 2001 ‘Five Cougars, Thanks’ commercial, updated with a female lead and a tongue-in-cheek cameo from Curnow. Smith takes on the role of the bartender whose looks distract a customer mid-order.
Smith said he was happy to poke fun at himself and felt the throwback concept was a natural fit. “The campaign encapsulates what the Barry brand is all about – being fun, in the moment and a bit provocative – and it connects with our target audience through humour and cultural nostalgia.”
Curnow added that while the shoot was a light-hearted experience, Barry is serious about its growth.
“The ad shoot was great fun, and Barry is definitely a passion project and creative outlet for us, but underpinning the brand’s light-hearted persona, there’s a very sound business and marketing strategy – which is necessary to have cut-through in such a competitive retail sector.”
The move into dark spirits expands Barry’s portfolio beyond its existing vodka- and agave-based sodas, while keeping to its focus on lighter RTDs with bold flavours.
Barry Cherry Vanilla Cola is available nationwide in single cans, four-packs and cartons of 16.
