It’s footy finals season and for Tasmanian Bakeries’ National Pies, that means the ovens in Hobart are running 24/7 for its own novel sport. In the lead-up to September’s AFL and NRL finals, the team will bake more than one million pies and pastries – enough to fill the MCG 10 times over.
“September is like Christmas coming early at the bakery, with the National Pies elves working overtime to keep up with demand,” said National Pies CEO Geraldine Tebbutt.
The sheer scale of production is a reminder of precisely how deep Australia’s love of pies runs. Data from Roy Morgan suggests 10.6 million Australians enjoy pies, pasties and sausage rolls, with New South Wales taking the crown as the biggest pie-eating state, accounting for nearly a third of the national total.
“We know Aussies love our fresh range of Little Pies and Little Sausage Rolls, so we will be working around the clock to ensure they have their ultimate footy finals favourites,” Tebbutt said.
To keep up, the bakery leans on local supply chains – tonnes of Tasmanian flour and Australian beef pass through its kitchens in the space of a few weeks.
Tebbutt adds: “Every pie is made from scratch daily, and within hours of manufacturing, our pies, sausage rolls and pasties are being sent across the Bass Strait, direct to our customers in the ready-meal aisle of Australia’s leading supermarkets.
“It’s an enormous effort from the team, but one that ensures fans enjoy the most convenient pies possible. Our Little Pies are oven-ready in just 10 minutes, so you can get back to the game in no time.”
National Pies products are now available across the country, including Woolworths, selected Coles stores, independents such as IGA and FoodWorks and hot from the oven at some Bunnings cafés.
