
Tasmania has taken centre stage in Osaka as a partner in the Australian Pavilion at World Expo 2025 in Osaka, putting some of the state’s best produce in front of millions of international visitors.
Minister for Small Business, Trade and Consumer Affairs, Guy Barnett, said since the pavilion opened in April, more than two million people have streamed through.
“World Expo 2025 offers a unique opportunity to highlight our premium produce with global audiences and to strengthen Tasmania’s trade relationships, particularly with Japan, one of our key export markets,” he said.
“Our food and beverages are increasingly appreciated on the world stage, and this event allows us to share the innovation, quality and passion that define Tasmanian products.”
From August 31 to September 4, chef Andre Kropp took to the kitchen for a run of cooking demos, plating up interactive tastings that exhibited Tasmanian ingredients to curious crowds. “A highlight of Tasmania’s presence is the live cooking demonstrations by acclaimed Tasmanian chef Andre Kropp, who participated with support from the Tasmanian Government,” Minister Barnett said.
A Friends of Tasmania Dinner added to the line-up, bringing together Japanese buyers and distributors over Cape Grim beef, Huon salmon, Tasman Sea Salt, Spring Bay Distillery spirits and wines from Josef Chromy, Moorilla and Apsley Gorge.
The program also spotlighted a soba noodle demonstration using Tasmanian buckwheat – first grown in the state back in 1988. The event was a collaboration between Heazlewood Seeds and Shiratori Flour Mills of Japan, which highlighted the quality and versatility of Tasmanian grains.
“These events are more than just culinary showcases; they are strategic opportunities to build relationships, promote Tasmanian exports, and reinforce our reputation for food and beverage excellence on a global stage,” Minister Barnett said.
“By supporting our industry and working hand in hand with producers, exporters and partners, we are delivering for Tasmania.”
