Stargazer Wines has opened a new tasting room in the Coal River Valley, giving visitors a chance to experience one of Tasmania’s most exciting boutique producers in the landscape that shapes its wines.
Set on a quiet hillside about 30 minutes from Hobart, the space offers a slow, intimate style of wine tasting that brings guests closer to the vineyard than ever before.
The tasting room sits within the Palisander Vineyard at Tea Tree, an 11-hectare property with five hectares under vine. The site is the source of Stargazer’s small batch Pinot Noir, Riesling and Chardonnay, along with emerging varieties such as Gamay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer.
The space opens in the same year that winemaker and owner Samantha Connew was named the Australian Society of Viticulture and Oenology Winemaker of the Year for 2025.
The vineyard itself has grown steadily since Samantha Connew took over, expanding from the original one hectare planted in 2004 to its current footprint. The mix of varieties reflects her interest in exploring the possibilities of Tasmania’s cool climate and the complexity it can bring to both classic and alternative grapes.
Designed by Maguire + Devine Architects and built by J and M Construction, the tasting room uses natural materials and long valley views to create a pared-back, calming setting. Tastings are held at a single communal table with a maximum of twelve guests per session. Each 90-minute experience is hosted personally by Samantha Connew and includes current releases with occasional pours from the cellar.
Reflecting on the project, she said, “From the outset, I wanted to create a space that reflects what Stargazer is all about: considered, thoughtful, and grounded in this place.”
She added, “The Palisander vineyard has grown alongside my winemaking journey, and this tasting room brings everything together. It’s a place where guests can see where their wine was grown, feel the story of the landscape, and taste the results in the glass.
“What began as a dream back in 2020 has finally become reality. I can’t wait to share the beauty and character of the Coal River Valley with everyone who visits. Whether you’re a seasoned wine enthusiast or just beginning your journey, we hope you’ll enjoy discovering the wines and the place that inspired them.”
Tastings cost 35 dollars per person, with complimentary access for Wine Club members. Sessions run Friday to Monday at 10 am, 12.30 pm and 3 pm, with bookings essential via stargazerwine.com.au.
The Stargazer Tasting Room is located at 37 Rosewood Lane, Tea Tree, Tasmania.
