Negroni Week is around the corner and we’ve rounded up the best spots in Sydney and Melbourne celebrating the iconic bittersweet cocktail from September 22 to 28.
But first – What is a Negroni?
New to Negronis? There’s no shame in that. What we wouldn’t give to try one for the first time all over again.
An aperitif at heart, the Negroni is built on equal parts gin, vermouth rosso (the red, semi-sweet kind) and Campari, served over ice and finished with a slice or twist of orange.
If you’re a fan of dark chocolate, citrus zest or bold flavours in general, this one’s for you.
Keen for a taste? Here’s where to go:
Sydney
Wayfarer’s Bar & Café - Pyrmont
Wayfarer’s Bar & Café is a hidden gem in Pyrmont, tucked into the lobby of boutique hotel Aiden Darling Harbour serving up an elevated Negroni recipe.
Classic Negroni ingredients are accentuated with strawberry and vanilla, adding a sweet, aromatic edge. Golden hour in the spring with cocktails, perhaps even followed by a show at the nearby Lyric Theatre – Who can say no to that?
Hurricane’s Grill & Bar Cronulla Beach - Cronulla
The beachside setting does half the work at Hurricane’s Grill & Bar in Cronulla, where the sea breeze complements the classic Negroni. The white-clad feature bar in this restaurant is reminiscent of a hideaway in Greece where guests can double down with oysters and hiramasa kingfish sashimi from the raw bar.
Folly’s Bar & Bistro - Cammeray
The Coffee Negroni at neighbourhood bar and bistro, Folly’s, is what you can picture Orson Welles nursing at the warmly-lit, marble-topped bar, working on his next manuscript.
With its brooding mix of Archie Rose Bone Dry Gin, Campari, Oscar 697 Rosso Vermouth, Mr Black Coffee Liqueur and cold-brewed espresso, it provides a dark, roasty alternative to the classic and is perfect for a nightcap after dinner.
Alternatively, if you’re after something smaller, you can opt for the Mini Negroni, made with Archie Rose Straight Dry Gin, Campari and Oscar 697 Rosso Vermouth. Smaller cocktails mean you can enjoy a second one without any guilt.
St Leonards Tavern - St Leonards
Beer has remained the star of the show at “The Tav” for more than 125 years running, but the newly-renovated local pub serves up solid classic cocktails in the same warm and friendly fashion.
The Negroni on offer here is a traditional version of the classic, best enjoyed tucked up in an army-green leather booth under dimly-lit industrial pendant lights, along with a pub feed to help soak up the spirits.
CONTE - Clarence St, Sydney
CONTE is marking Negroni Week with a one-night-only dinner hosted by Claudio Bedini, curator of L’ora del Vermouth and Head Bartender at Maybe Sammy.
On Tuesday, September 23, Bedini will guide guests through a five-course menu, each dish paired with a bespoke Negroni that highlights the refined complexity of vermouth and the timeless elegance of the cocktail. Expect a night of Italian spirit, flavour and flair, with CONTE’s kitchen anchoring the experience.
This is a ticketed event.
Hunter & Barrel - Multiple locations
Hunter & Barrel, the modern Australian dining concept built on charcoal and wood fire, takes its drinks just as seriously as its meat. At the core of its in-house barrel-aging program is the House Negroni, aged in oak to develop a bold yet balanced depth of flavour.
The result is a signature cocktail that’s become a menu staple and a fitting partner for the restaurant’s steak program. Beyond the Negroni, the drinks list also champions barrel-aged traditions with craft ales, an extensive wine offering and other cocktails served straight from the barrel.

Melbourne
Arcadia Cafe and Bar - Fitzroy
Arcadia brings a summer-café vibe to Fitzroy with an all-day brunch menu and a Negroni list that goes beyond the classic. New to the menu this week are the Sbagliato Negroni with Campari, vermouth and prosecco, and the Sexy Cousin Negroni made with Aperol, gin and sweet vermouth, sitting alongside the house Arcadian Negroni.
All three also feature in the bottomless package, where cocktails, beer and wine can be added to any main dish for a set 90-minute session.
La Madonna Restaurant & Bar - Melbourne CBD
La Madonna has recently relaunched under new Executive Chef Jacopo Degli Esposti, who blends his Italian heritage with French Michelin-starred training in a fresh culinary concept that celebrates seasonal local produce.
This cross-cultural style extends to the drinks list, with the restaurant’s exclusive Barrel Room inspiring a “build your own negroni” menu featuring premium gins, vermouth and bitters from Victoria, France and Italy.
The La Madonna Bar also stands on its own, with a highlight being the barrel-aged Negroni, made with Gin du Australian Dry Gin, Bruto Americano and Mancino Rosso, matured for eight weeks in new charred oak barrels.
The Rochey - Fitzroy
Every Sunday is Negroni day at The Rochey. This cosy Fitzroy pub is known for its cold beer local wine, cocktails and generous meals. Everything you’d expect from a solid, neighbourhood pub.
The Rochey is offering $16 Negronis on Sundays, with a side of pool, great music and quality time with friends, family and furry friends.
Mill Place Merchants - Melbourne CBD
Tucked off Flinders Lane in a three-storey heritage building dating back to the 1840s, Mill Place Merchants channels old-world charm with prohibition-era inspired dining and cocktails to match.
This Negroni Week, the CBD speakeasy is inviting guests to step back in time with a month-long celebration of the world’ s most iconic apertif. From September 22 to 28, the bar will transform into a temple of cocktail history, showcasing six legendary drinks that trace the story of the Negroni; from its Italian roots in the 1800s to its place today as a global classic.
Guests can sip their way through the ages with a curated menu that pays homage to the bartenders, bars and cultural moments that shaped the Negroni’s legacy.
Luxsmith - Seddon
A local favourite in Melbourne’s inner west, Luxsmith is known for its Vietnamese and Thai-inspired mod-Asian menu.
For Negroni Week, the team is shaking things up with three special takes on the classic, including the Nankai Negroni featuring shochu and the ever-popular Negroni Sbagliato. It’s a line-up designed to showcase different expressions of the iconic aperitif.
Bottega - Melbourne CBD
Italian institution Bottega is leaning into Negroni Week with a four-course chef’s menu built around the cocktail’s bold, bittersweet flavours.
Dishes include red wine-braised beef cheek with soft polenta, confit baby carrots and orange gremolata, and tagliolini with tuna crudo, lemon and cultured butter. Guests can opt for a classic Negroni alongside or go all in with curated cocktail pairings matched to each course.
