Boutique bakery Martha’s opens in Wareemba

Mediterranean-inspired boutique bakery, Martha’s, has opened on Great North Road in Wareemba, bringing a mix of pastries, sandwiches and coffee to Sydney’s waterside suburb. The bakery and café can seat up to 20 across banquettes, curb-side tables and a standing espresso bar, plus a full takeaway menu.

The food offering takes cues from Mediterranean flavours while keeping familiar bakery staples on the counter. Classics such as croissants, cinnamon scrolls and custard tarts sit alongside twists including a twice-baked almond croissant with cardamom and rosewater, a zaatar knot with tahini dipping sauce and an nduja eggplant and basil pastry.


The sweet menu covers olive oil citrus cake, double chocolate brownies and cookies in variations like Earl Grey, black sesame or brown butter choc chip with sea salt. On the savoury side, sandwiches are made with hand-rolled breads, sourdough and rosemary focaccia. Options range from a spiced lamb roll with caponata, tzatziki and rocket to a roast chicken and avocado sourdough and a focaccia stack layered with salami, mortadella, pesto, stracciatella and basil oil.

Coffee is served alongside drinks with a twist, including nutmeg citrus cold brew, blackberry matcha and maple brown butter iced oat lattes poured on tap.

Owner Paris Nassif says: “Our menu is about staying true to our roots and identity, but also having fun with the classics that people know and love. With the bakery, we wanted to create a place where people could slow down, savour something and feel that sense of renewal – a place to rise again each morning.”

Martha’s is open Wednesday to Sunday, 6 am – 4 pm at 312 Great North Road, Wareemba.

Australians are trying to eat healthy but supermarket specials aren’t keeping up

Australian supermarkets are pushing discounted processed foods while shoppers are trying to eat better, and new research shows the gap is widening. A YouGov survey of more than 1,000 Australians, commissioned by retail technology company Shopfully, found 78% of shoppers have gone to the supermarket intending to buy healthy food, only to end up putting something less nutritious in the trolley because it was on special. It’s not a one-off either: 15% say it happens often and 43% say it happens occasionally. The demand for change is almost unanimous. More than eight in ten Australians (83%) want supermarkets to promote healthy products like fresh fruit, vegetables and organic foods more frequently, with 52% strongly agreeing, a rare level of consensus in consumer research. But the reality on the shelves looks different. More than half of Australians (51%) believe supermarket promotions are primarily focused on processed foods like soft drinks, snacks and baked goods. Fewer than one in five (19%) feel that healthier products get the same promotional treatment. Two in three Australians (67%) go further, saying supermarket promotions actively encourage greater consumption of processed foods. Brendan Straw, Country Manager at Shopfully Australia, said, “These results show Australians aren’t asking supermarkets to choose between affordability and health. They’re asking for both, and right now, many feel that balance just isn’t there.” The specials trap The generational split is telling. Gen X and Baby Boomers are the most sceptical, far more likely to believe promotions favour processed foods, while younger shoppers and city dwellers are slightly more optimistic. Gen Z and Gen X shoppers are also among the most likely to abandon healthy intentions at the checkout due to price promotions, as are families and unmarried households. Straw said, “Promotions don’t just influence what people spend, they influence how people eat. When ultra-processed foods are consistently the most visible and discounted options, they naturally win, even when shoppers have the best intentions.” The access problem The research points to accessibility rather than motivation as the core issue. Just 2% of Australians actively disagree with the idea of more promotions on healthy food, suggesting the appetite is there. When healthier options aren’t prominently promoted or competitively priced, shoppers default to what’s cheaper and more visible, regardless of what they came in planning to buy. “This is a real opportunity for retailers. Australians are telling us they want help making healthier choices without stretching the budget. Retailers that respond by making healthier options more visible, affordable and easier to plan around will be better placed to build trust and loyalty in a highly competitive market,” Straw said. As cost-of-living pressures continue into 2026, the research suggests Australians are no longer willing to choose between value and health, and are increasingly expecting supermarkets to bridge that gap. “When healthier options are easier to find, compare and plan around, behaviour can shift. Retailers have an opportunity to bring value-led, healthier promotions earlier into the shopping journey, and then reinforce them through retail media and in-store visibility. AI is taking on the admin load in Australian restaurants and bars

Australian restaurants and bars are slowly allowing AI to handle their paperwork, marking a clear shift in how the hospitality industry operates behind the scenes. The technology being adopted isn’t the kind you chat with. Rather than conversational AI like ChatGPT or Claude, venues are turning to agentic AI tools like Dext‘s AI Assist, which uses computer vision to read receipts and invoices, including handwritten ones, and automatically extract and categorise every line item into the correct place in a venue’s bookkeeping records. Venues leveraging AI Steven Blaine from Decimal, a hospitality finance and technology partner based in Western Australia, said the problem the technology is solving is bigger than it looks from the outside. “Running a hospitality business is a real grind at times. However, technology is changing this, and many venues are capitalising on new ways of working by leveraging AI,” he said. “If you run a large kitchen, you’re getting fruit and vegetables every day, seafood, meat and all sorts of deliveries. You might have 50 supplier invoices on a weekly basis just for one department. On top of this, hospitality businesses also require far more granular financial data than many other industries because operators need precise visibility into spending across multiple categories. Applying an AI agent to this challenge means more precision, fewer mistakes and saving a lot of time.” Real world applications The real-world applications are surprisingly specific. One of Decimal’s clients was buying produce for both its bar and kitchen from the same supplier, but with invoices addressed slightly differently depending on the account. Before AI, separating those costs manually was unavoidable. Now it happens automatically. Blaine said, “AI-powered automation can separate these costs easily and precisely, saving the venue huge amounts of time, and allowing them to calculate profit from food sales more easily.” “One of our hospo clients buys fruit and vegetables for both their bar and kitchen from the same supplier. But the invoices are addressed slightly differently depending on the account,” he added. “Before AI, we couldn’t automatically code those invoices correctly, separating the two different budgets for the venue’s bar and kitchen. AI now can seamlessly code everything to the right expense account, without any manual input from us or the venue.” Another Decimal client needed fuel levy charges separated from food costs during a period of rising diesel prices. “We used the auto-categorisation, line-item extraction and agentic AI rule on Dext to automate the process. The combination of automation, AI-powered data extraction and intelligent categorisation dramatically improves both efficiency and accuracy for hospitality operators,” Blaine explained. Regulation, compliance and front-of-house use AI is also being used for regulatory compliance in the hospitality space. During an ATO audit, cancelled ABNs from suppliers can become a serious liability for venues. According to Blaine, if the ATO audits a venue and finds cancelled ABNs from suppliers, that becomes a serious issue. It’s up to the venue to check that all their suppliers have a valid ABN, and that can be a real pain. AI comes to the rescue in those instances. The technology is also moving into front-of-house. AI-powered reservation agents can answer incoming calls, collect customer details and book tables without any staff involvement, a meaningful development for venues dealing with ongoing staffing shortages. “One really interesting area is AI-powered reservation agents,” Blain shared. “When you ring a venue, instead of a staff member stopping what they’re doing to answer the phone, the AI handles the booking, collects the customer information and reserves the table automatically.” Cloud-based point-of-sale platforms are also embedding AI-driven analytics that let operators ask plain-language questions about their business and get answers instantly rather than manually pulling reports. “You can ask questions like: ‘How many people come back after using the burger-and-pint promotion to buy anything else?’ Previously, you’d have to manually run reports and analyse the data yourself. Now AI can surface those insights almost instantly.” For an industry that runs on razor-thin margins, the question is no longer whether AI has a place in hospitality.
